Sassy Kraimspri - Dirty White LiesI first heard of Sassy via Twitter, that wonderful way to discover new and exciting music. Someone on there suggested that I check her out and after hearing what was on Sassy's MySpace page decided to learn more about this talented Norwegian. Her sound has been described as 'Chick Rock' but don't confuse what is on this album with the "pop punk" crap that that label is usually associated with, and here's why.... Sassy was born in Norway but was raised surrounded by the sounds of the underground punk scene of New York, and these very different influences are there for all to hear in the heavy punk infused riffage of 'Dirty White Lies'. The baritone guitar gives the album an unbelievably good, heavy, sound and there is just a hint of Norwegian black metal thrown into the mix. So it's punk, definitely, but punk with a heavier edge sometimes, and topped with Sassy's amazing down and dirty vocals (This young lady does 'sexy' like you wouldn't believe). From the moment the album kicks off with the brilliant single 'Toy Boy' this record just oozes a special something. The heavier edge lifts this album above traditional modern Punk rock. From the doom laden riffs of "All Work and No Play" to the softer more gentle stylings of of 'Older' and 'Take it Slow' this is an album that allows Sassy to explore various aspects of her considerable vocal talents. There are even moments where you can almost hear touches of the great 60s Jazz vocalists, listen to the start of 'Noose' and see what I mean :) The result of this is an album that is really easy to like. The deep guitar sound, the songs, the emotion, the variety and the voice, THAT voice. So what next then ? Sassy is currently in the studio in the woods of Southern Norway writing and doing pre-production for album number two, with Tricky Dicky Downfall as a co-writer. Tricky Dick is a punk legend from Sydney Australia who met and wooed Ms. Kraimspri at a Christmas party in Sydney in the wee hours in 2004. The next Sassy Kraimspri release will be produced by the legendary Russ Russell of Napalm Death, The Exploited and The Wildhearts fame. The demo track 'Pussy Magnet' is available here and a magnificent slice of Ramones inspired punk it is. If this is anything to go by the next album is going to be an absolute belter. Sassy's summer will be filled with a Norwegian summer tour and multiple festival stops, before heading to Australia in late July followed by China in August. We really hope some UK dates will also be lined up. Dizzy | ||||||
