Nevermore / Death Angel - Live Review - Islington Academy 18/05/10We say :- Here at Cack Blabbath we have been big fans of Seattle Prog Metallers Nevermore for longer than we care to remember, so when a one off show was announced in London we knew that we HAD to be there. Singer Warrel Dane can certainly belt out a tune and really impressed us back in the 80s when we first saw him with his previous band Sanctuary. So, after a 5 hour drive the Islington Academy was reached and a night of top notch metal anticipated. Unfortunately a slight cock up on the timings meant missing the first band on the bill, Cauldron. This was a pisser as people who caught them said that they put on a great show. Next up were veteran Bay Area thrashers Death Angel. This is a band that have, since their reformation in 2001, have gradually been building momentum culminating with the release of 2008's Killing Season. Live Death Angel were everything that a thrash band should be, heavy and fast. From the opening blasts of "Lord of Hate" this was clearly a band who knew what they were all about. The set covered their entire career from the title track to 1987s "The Ultra Violence" up to a taster of the new album in the form of "River of Rapture". If this new track is anything to go by the next Death Angel album should be a bit special..... Next up were everyone's main event, Nevermore. The band were clearly enjoying themselves and from the first moments of the opener "Beyond Within" it was clear this was going to be some show. And it was. Nevermore stormed through their set with Jeff Loomis' MENTAL shredding and Warrel's voice intermixing to stunning effect.
The highpoint of the evening was "Emptiness Unobstructed". We were treated to this future classic not once but twice. The show was being filmed for a DVD release and first time round Warrel fucked up the lyrics so they apologised, explained the situation and played it again. Brilliant. Warrel did ask how we all knew the words to these new songs when the album is not out yet. As if we would download anything from torrent sites ;) At the Academy Nevermore not only served us notice of how brilliant they are live, but also reminded us of how many great tracks they have in their back catalogue. The set included storming versions of "Born" and "The Seven Tongues of God" performed with an incredible passion. Amongst these classics new tracks like the stunning "The Obsidian Conspiracy" sounded equally impressive. Nevermore were definitely one of the best bands I have seen this year. The level of contact and rapport that Warrel had with the audience was great to see, and this was clearly a band who were loving every second of their time on stage. There will be a world tour following the release of "The Obsidian Conspiracy". Go see Nevermore, you won't regret it. Dizzy
