Friday the 10th of March saw The Bodega Social Club in Nottingham play host to a sell-out gig from the Amazons, a young up and upcoming rock band from Reading. The Amazons have been hotly tipped as a band to watch for 2017, with inclusion on the BBC’s Sound of 2017 long list and MTV’s Brand New 2017 list.
The Bodega Social is a popular small live music venue in the centre of Nottingham with a long and impressive list of previous guests. The band was playing upstairs and unfortunately I only managed to catch the back end of their support act Otherkin, who already had the crowd pumped.
The Amazons didn’t hang around getting on stage and setting up their equipment before jumping straight into their set. It’s hard for me to pick out one particular standout moment such was the quality of the whole performance. They were confident and played solidly for about an hour and at no point did it feel like they were filling time between their more well-known tracks, the whole set blended seamlessly into one.
They clearly enjoyed being on stage and interacted easily with the crowd, recalling how they had played Nottingham before and were happy to be back. Whilst they didn’t play an encore the lead singer reappeared after the gig to spend time with the fans and pose for photographs.
I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and no doubt as the fan base grows and the size of the venue increases the energy of the performances will only intensify.
The Amazons are due to release their first album in June 2017 and its one I will be adding to my collection.
