The thing is, this was one of those social networking things. I got a follow on Twitter, and so I went and checked out her stuff on Reverbnation, and VK and I got chatting. She’s involved in a couple of projects with some new stuff to be released very soon and, in the mean time, to give me an idea of what might come she winged her last album to me and I was so impressed with it I thought it well worthy of a review.
Something this good needs more people to be aware of.
Whiskey Or Water is a bluesy rock album. What struck me the most though, are VK’s vocals. She reminds me a LOT of Chrissie Hynde in many ways, and if you listen you’ll get exactly what I mean. The album itself is a quite laid back affair, steeped in atmosphere and showing off some very good song writing. Musically t’s also very good, with enough variation to keep things moving along and to hold your interest.
The whole record is extremely soulful, and very emotional. It’s clearly indicative of the artist very much wearing her heart on her sleeve. Throughout the whole thing there’s a certain vulnerability and you find yourself being drawn into it without realising. It grabs you on many different levels, while at the same time appearing to have an air of innocence. Kind of like a river that’s as smooth as glass on top but with an undercurrent that will drag you down and carry you off before you even know what’s going on.
This is a very strong album and, honestly, I simply can’t wait to hear what VK might come up with in her new ventures. One thing that is guaranteed though, if it’s even half as good as Whiskey Or Water then it’s still going to be stunning.
Keep your ears open for this young lady.
