Whether it was the break to indulge their creative juices (with the largely well received MaYan project) or just a more focused attention to detail, the latest record from Dutch metallers Epica has some nicely honed songwriting, plenty of melodic kicks and tricks and, when they need it, plenty of oomph. Deter the Tyrant (including a very strange Colonel Gaddafi speech) and Delirium are obvious standouts but there’s lots to doff the proverbial cap to- so we will. There’s no pious self regard to what Epica do: it’s lush, orchestral, heavy and pretty much decent entertainment end to end.
