We Say :- These CB Spotlight things are certainly getting a wide variety of responses. Next up we have something completely different, the debut EP from the rather nattlily named Christgrinder. Now usually when you first listen to something some sort of genre association pops into your mind pretty much straight away, but this is a band who defy any immediately obvious pigeon holeing.
Spiky logo though, so set your expectations accordingly….
Death Metal, well there’s definitely a load of that, and the Black Metal influences are there but to simply label this “Blackened Death Metal” would be to take the easy way out. Ok, so it’s about as out there as “extreme metal” gets, but they manage this without sounding quite like any of the established inhabitants of metal’s outermost reaches.
That’s not to say that it’s all extreme though, as Christgrinder occasionally inject some melody into their blasphemy with quieter more reflective passages and even the odd almost symphonic touch (without falling down any of the hideous overblown cliche pitfalls).
Another thing that really appeals (well, to me anyway) about this is the overall sound the band have achieved. Intentionally or not the production has left an unclean, sludgey edge to the thing, a sort of necropunk vibe that adds to the dark, brooding atmosphere. Whether it’s fast and brutal or slow and heavy Christgrinder always conjure up dark echoes of something born in the limbic lobe of a diseased mind.
With Smoke Crack, Worship Satan Christgrinder have delivered something unexpected, and a bit special. If Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft put an metal band together, this is pretty much what it would sound like.
Band Name : Christgrinder
Year Formed : 2009
Location : Stafford
Current Lineup :
Baron von Christgrinde – vocals, guitar
Cardinal Sinne – vocals, bass, drums
Brief History :
Christgrinder was formed in 2009 by Baron von Christgrinde, & proceeded to release a couple of demos. The Baron was joined by Cardinal Sinne in 2010, and over the course of that year, Christgrinder proceeded to write and record their debut E.P. ‘Smoke Crack, Worship Satan’, which was released in 2011 to unreservedly sycophantic reviews.
Career Highlight :
Probably the release of the E.P. earlier this year, although we were once offered a slot supporting Mick Harris’ project Scorn. Regrettably we had to turn it down because we couldn’t get a live drummer in time – curses!
Future Plans:
We’re currently writing for our first full length. We’re looking to enter the studio to record it early next year. That and on a continuing quest to find a live drummer.
Interesting Stuff :
Christgrinder is an overtly anti-religious band, but we don’t limit ourselves to Christianity – we’re equal opportunity blasphemers. One of the songs on our upcoming full length, entitled ‘Opening the eye of Aisha’ is about the consummation of the marriage of The Prophet Muhammad to his 9 year old wife Aisha. It has a carla bley style saxophone solo.
Ideal tour-mates : Anaal Nathrakh, or Behemoth
Dream rider : At the risk of being boring, probably just alcohol & food.
