They Say :- Every musician has his or her own reason for being in a band. We all enjoy being involved with something unique. No tribute bands for us!
Every band we’ve ever loved has added something unique to what has went before; whether it was their riffs or their attitude; or the personal/political truth in their lyrics…could even be just their name. We’re gonna keep delivering our music, uncompromised, and then when it’s time, we’re gonna fuck off!
While we’re around we want to work with decent, talented music and unmusic people who can help us realise & deliver our musical and visual creations without compromise…and find our audience.
We Say :-
Lets start off by saying, Butterfly Fan The Inferno is the, erm, oddest name we have heard for a while. Right, that done, lets move on….
BFTI can trace their roots back to 1999 when the band was started by guitarist / vocalist John Kelly but it took 7 years for things to start to take off when the band started gigging. The band have played some fairly high profile support slots and have been featured in session on the 6music.
Now the current band, featuring Paul Collins on drums, Tony Wilkinson on guitar and Jase Holgate on bass have been in the studio, and the result is the new single Brassneck which is, at first listen, an interesting mix of styles and beats. Once you get into it though you soon realise it has a funky, catchy ska infused classic rock vibe to it that gets lodged in your skull and hangs around there. Think Talking Heads meets The Specials, that sort of territory.
The second track on this release is Inferno, which is less Ska and more Rock with the guitars brought to the fore and a more ‘traditional’ feel. Of the two tracks on the release I prefer this one with it’s QOTSA-esque mood.
There isn’t anything complicated or overblown about this single, it’s good catchy fun. The only issue I have with it is that there are only two tracks and it certainly leaves you wanting more. Given the very different feels that the band give to Brassneck and Frantic it will be interesting to see the variety they could fit into an album.
